Questions to consider before booking a Notary Public for notary services:
Is your document complete? I will not provide legal advice or assist you in filling out your document.
Is the document going to be sent out of state? Other actions may apply. *Documents sent out of state may be required to bear proof that the Notary’s signature and seal are genuine and that the Notary had authority to act at the time of notarization. An authenticating certificate from the FL Secretary of State costs $10. This is your responsibility to obtain.
Is my document going to be sent out of the country? Other actions may apply. *Documents sent out of country: A chain authentication process may be necessary and additional certificates of authority may have to be obtained from the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and a ministry of foreign affairs in the particular foreign nation. This is your responsibility to obtain.
*Apostilles and The Hague Convention: Fortunately, over 100 nations, including the U.S., subscribe to a treaty that simplifies authentication of notarized documents exchanged between any of the nations. Under The Hague Convention, only 1 authenticating certificate, called an apostille, is necessary to ensure acceptance of a Notary’s signature and stamp in subscribing countries. Apostilles are issued by the Florida Department of State. To assist the department in determining the correct type of authenticating certificate, any request must include the country of destination. This is your responsibility to obtain.
Do you need a copy of Vital or Public Records? I’m not authorized to certify a copy of such documents (FS 117.05[12][a]). Only officials in a bureau of vital statistics or other public record office may certify originals or copies of such certificates.
Do you need verification of an oath? I can execute a Jurat when notarizing affidavits, depositions, and other forms of written verification requiring an oath by the signer.
